DIAL has adopted Environment Management System (EMS) at Delhi Airport and is certified under ISO 14001:2015. EMS provides an organized and formal approach towards managing environmental aspects and its impacts at IGI Airport.
Key objectives are:
  • Ensure all pollution prevention measure are adopted with sustainable infrastructure
  • Assess and manage all possible potential environmental aspects and impacts that organization shall encounter (internal and external)
  • Ensure stakeholders participation in the airport development programs and environmental initiatives
  • Communicate various stages of airport development programs to stakeholders and sustainability requirements
  • Provide training & education to employees on environment management requirements
Aircraft Noise abatement is one of the key areas the DIAL focuses on. In order to manage aircraft noise, DIAL along with stakeholders such as Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air Traffic Controller (ATC), Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have implemented various noise mitigation measures. Further, ICAO balanced approach is followed to reduce the noise impact.
As per MoEF&CC notification, the aircraft noise levels for busy airport is 70 dB(A) Leq for day time (6 AM to 10 PM) and 65 dB(A) Leq for night time (10 PM to 6 AM). Besides, the Lmax level for aircrafts are 105 dB(A) for day time (6 AM to 10 PM) and 95 dB(A) for night time (10 PM to 6 AM).
The followings are the various noise mitigation steps taken by Delhi Airport:
  • Distribution of aircraft movement which has been done in the form of mixed-mode operation of the runways that provides benefit from noise experienced by a particular region
  • Continuous Decent Approach (CDA)
  • Noise complaint system
  • Restricted operation of chapter-2 aircraft (old aircrafts) and
  • Automatic aircraft noise monitoring System in all the approach of runways to monitor noise levels around airport and enable to identify noisy aircrafts.
  • Aircraft tracking system has been installed along with Aircraft Noise Monitoring terminal at IGI Airport.

Air quality management & Emission reduction are focused areas at Delhi Airport; DIAL being an environmentally responsible organization has taken numerous initiatives to improve the overall air quality aspects in Delhi Airport. Some of the key initiatives adopted by Delhi Airport are.
  • Integration of Green Building concept in building design and operation, energy efficient infrastructure, efficient lighting, use of day light, adoption of Smart Building Management System (BMS), adoption of ISO standards etc. to reduce overall energy consumption and reduce its impact on Air pollution.
  • Installation of solar power plant (7.84 MW) and use of renewable energy
  • Use of Bridge Mounted Equipment’s (BMEs) such as Fixed Ground Power Unit (FGPU) and Pre-conditioned air service, eliminates the use of Auxiliary Power Units (APU) by aircrafts, which are run by ATF. Thus the use of BMEs reduces air pollution significantly.
  • Delhi Airport has installed dedicated CNG fuelling station at airport and most of the airside vehicles use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), reducing emission load.
  • Delhi Airport has adopted multi modal connectivity to improve passenger access to airport by metro as well as road transport. In addition to metro connectivity to Terminal 3, Terminal 1 has also got metro connectivity.
  • Improved Road Infrastructures: Six lane road connections to T3 building from NH8, 1.5 km long six lane northern access roads to reduce the vehicular congestion and resulted emission.
  • Delhi Airport developed a large portion of the airport area as landscape area with mostly native and adaptive plants, leading to significant improvement in air quality.
  • To avoid fuel spillage and also reduce movement of oil tankers/fueling vehicles, Delhi Airport has developed dedicated fuel hydrant network system.
  • Use of Airport-Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) for airport operation and all runways operation to minimize the aircraft delay and associated emission.
  • Use of green taxing procedure such as TaxiBot to reduce ATF burning during taxing procedures.
  • Use of battery operated vehicle in terminal, apron (for luggage trolley) and cargo.
  • Apart from this DIAL also carries out regular air quality monitoring in and around the airport area.
Water is one of the key elements required for the efficient, hygienic and customer friendly airport operation, thus water management is one of the major focus areas at Delhi Airport. DIAL’s key objectives are-Sustainable development and management of water resources by continual assessment, conservation, augmentation, protection from pollution and safe distribution.
In order to reduce the dependency on fresh water, DIAL follows the 3R model i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recharge water. Our key water sustainability initiatives are-
  • DIAL has set up 5 MLD advanced water treatment plant to provide good quality water to passengers in Terminals.
  • DIAL has installed 16.6 MLD plant to treat and reuse the wastewater for various purposes. This state of the art Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has been designed and operating to achieve zero discharge and reduce water consumption. Treated wastewater is being used for HVAC makeup, toilet flushing and landscaping purposes which help in reducing and optimizing fresh water demand.
  • DIAL has installed rain water harvesting wells in the storm water drains to improve water recharge.
  • Use of low flow fixtures and appliances for reduced water consumption such as low flush water closets and cisterns.
Cleanliness & waste management is extremely important at DIAL for ensuring hygiene, achieving high service quality standard and safety measure against bird strikes. Delhi Airport works exclusively with waste management companies which employ the highest environmental standards to handle different kind of waste streams. DIAL’s objective is to ensure effective waste management system for collection, segregation, storage and safe disposal of waste and comply with all regulatory requirements.
Waste such as Municipal Solid Waste, Hazardous Waste, E-Waste, Construction and Demolition waste are handled and disposed as per the legal framework. DIAL regularly checks to ensure that these standards are maintained. Training and Awareness to all the stakeholders on Waste Management and Environment Management System are regularly provided. Waste papers are being sent to recycling unit for the waste paper reuse.
DIAL’s key waste management initiatives are-
  • Installation of two bin system across the entire Delhi Airport infrastructure for ensuring source segregation of waste. DIAL has also implemented four bin systems in key locations to further promote segregation of waste into different streams such as – paper, plastic, glass/cans and food waste.
  • DIAL has also made a commitment to make Delhi Airport “single use plastic free” airport. This initiative will ensure reduced single use plastic waste generation
  • DIAL has implemented paper recycling program for waste paper generated from office and administrative area
  • There are employee engagement initiatives are in place to promote and waste to wealth programs
Extensive flora and fauna studies have been undertaken to determine the biodiversity values that exist within the airport boundary. The findings have been further supplemented through additional studies that are being undertaken as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Animals are rehabilitated with the help of wildlife and forest department and NGOs to various Wildlife Sanctuaries of Delhi.
DIAL has carried out proper landscaping and extensive tree plantation along with the construction activities at airport. Trees have been planted around the water bodies of Delhi. A very intensive and dense landscaping works have been carried out at the IGI Airport, using thousands of medium to big shrubs and trees as per master plan. Entire landscaping is irrigated with water conserving irrigation system with treated waste water. Automatic irrigation system with dedicated pipe line network is laid down around the airport to facilitate the treated waste water usage.
Airport Carbon Accreditation - Delhi Airport reached Level 3+ Neutrality Climate change is currently the biggest environmental challenge to humanity. DIAL being a responsible organization has taken up various mitigation and adaptation measures to reduce the impacts of climate change.
For GHG management, DIAL follows the target-oriented approach of Airports Council International’s Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. DIAL is currently certified under “Level 3+, Neutrality”, the first airport to achieve Carbon Neutral status in Asia-Pacific Region. Continuous focus on energy and fuel conservation adoption of renewable energy and other less emission intensive processes pursued by Delhi Airport has ably complimented the Carbon Neutral initiatives at this Airport.
Key initiatives towards climate change mitigation by DIAL are:

Key initiatives towards climate change adaptation by DIAL are:
  • Integration of Green Building concept in building design and operation, energy efficient infrastructure, efficient lighting, use of day light, adoption of Smart Building Management System (BMS), adoption of ISO standards etc. to reduce its impact on GHG Emission.
  • DIAL has developed robust storm water drainage network to adapt to extreme weather conditions such as excessive rain or cloud burst.
  • DIAL is continuously focusing on training and competency development, awareness creation among emplyees and stakeholders on climate change adaptation measures.
  • DIAL also works with neighboring communities to climate change adaptation measures such as rain water harvesting and recharge.
DIAL is highly focused towards ensuring sustainable development at Delhi Airport. The sustainability focus and strategies have yielded Terminal 3 being the first LEED Gold Accredited airport terminal building in the world for its green footprint for New Construction and IGBC Platinum rated for Existing Building standard.
Delhi Airport has achieved many milestones and record to become sustainable green airport by incorporating modern infrastructural development technique, advanced energy efficient technologies, environment conscious work culture, collaborative and airport partnership programs with regulators, stakeholders and communities.
DIAL has also adopted the first-of-its-kind Green Building Performance Monitoring Platform - ‘Arc’ developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for Terminal 3, Delhi Airport. This is a unique online building performance monitoring and scoring platform which is dynamic in nature. DIAL is currently rated LEED Platinum using “Arc”.
  • DIAL has received Excellence in Environment Management awards in an event organized by CII during the 18th CII-ITC Sustainability Awards Ceremony.
  • IGI Airport is the first “Level 4+, Transition” accredited airport in Asia Pacific region and only the second airport globally (2020). DIAL also became the first Carbon Neutral airport in Asia Pacific in 2016.
  • IGI Airport has won the prestigious “Green Airports Recognition” by ACI- Asia Pacific in 5 years in a row (2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017). In the year 2021, IGI Airport received Platinum recognition for its action towards Air Quality Management at IGI Airport. Terminal 3 of IGI Airport is certified as LEED GOLD under “New Construction” category. Terminal 3 also achieved “Platinum Rating” from Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) on Green Existing Building standard.
  • First Airport in the world to adopt and get certified using the first-of-its kind Green Building Performance Monitoring Platform- “Arc” by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for Terminal 3. Terminal 3 achieved as LEED Platinum using Arc.
  • IGI Airport is also the first airport in the world to adopt and get certified under PEER rating standard for the electrical distribution system at Terminal 3.
  • DIAL has also been rated as “Climate Oriented” company under Climate Action Program (CAP 2 Degree) by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) for the year 2019 and 2020.
  • IGI Airport is rated Platinum level by CII-Green Business Centre for Environmental excellence under GreenCo Framework
  • DIAL won the National Award for Excellence in Energy Management from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in the year- 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018. Based on its consistent energy performance over the years, DIAL also received National Energy Leader Award in 2022, 2021 & 2020.
  • Golden Peacock Award for Sustainability by Institute of Directors in 2018 etc.
  • DIAL has also received National Water Award 2019, from Government of India
  • DIAL achieved “Singe Use Plastic Free Airport Certification” from CII in 2020
  • Wings India Environment & Sustainability Award 2022
  • DIAL has received FICCI Water Award in 2022
  • Terminal 1 has received LEED Platinum Pre-certification in June 2022.
  • DIAL has received “Silver Rating” in ACI’s Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition (GAR) 2023 for “over 35 million passengers per annum category”.
  • The theme for this year GAR was Single Use Plastic Emission at Airports.
  • This is ixth consecutive recognition for DIAL in ACI Green Airports Recognition program since 2017.
  • Level 4+ achievement demonstrates DIAL’s emission reduction target in line the IPCC 1.5°C pathways.
  • DIAL has received prestigious “Wings India Awards 2022” for Aviation Sustainability & Environment.
  • The award was handed over to DIAL CEO by Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation on 25th March, at the Wings India 2022 held at Hyderabad.
  • The objective of this award is to recognize the notable contribution made by Aviation-related companies/organizations/institution in the area of civil aviation in India.
  • DIAL has received prestigious “FICCI Water Awards 2021” in the Industrial Water Use Efficiency Category.
  • Renowned companies from different sectors across India had applied under Industrial Water Use Efficiency category.
  • The Jury while evaluating DIAL’s case studies appreciated the water conservation and rain water harvesting initiatives adopted at Delhi Airport.
  • The award ceremony, held virtually on 2nd March 2022.
  • It was the fifth consecutive recognition for DIAL in ACI Green Airports Recognition program since 2017. The award was handed over to DIAL on 1st June 2021.
  • DIAL has received “Platinum Recognition” in ACI’s Asia-Pacific Green Airports Recognition 2020 for “over 25 million passengers per annum category”.
  • Our project submission was “Green Taxiing at IGI Airport’ which elaborated the TaxiBot implementation project at IGIA.

  • The project has achieved 80 points out of 110 on the LEED Version 4.0 Standard.
  • Out of 9 LEED categories, we got 100% in 4 categories of Integrative Process, Water Efficiency, Innovation & Regional Priorities.
  • DIAL has become the “First Airport” to in the world to achieve PEER Platinum Certified by USGBC/GBCI.
  • PEER recognizes industry leaders for improving efficiency, day-to-day reliability and overall resiliency. It evaluates a power system’s performance across 6 categories.
  • DIAL has successfully completed all the requirements of PEER Standard and scored 84/100.
