Ensuring growth at a global level entails the development of people from all walks of life, including the disabled category. If specially-abled individuals do not enjoy the same rights and equal access to resources as abled people, it would mean a failure to uphold human rights. So, to remind ourselves of the necessity of disability inclusion and to promote an understanding of the problems of people belonging to this category, December 3 is celebrated as International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Here is what Delhi Airport is doing to contribute towards the cause of raising awareness and ensuring equal access for disabled travellers!
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an observance promoted by the United Nations to commemorate the rights and well-being of people with special abilities. Celebrated on December 3, the event was first proclaimed in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.
The day aims to encourage an understanding of disabled problems. Its agenda is to mobilise support, so challenged individuals can be promised dignity, equal rights, and overall well-being. Besides, the event also attempts to increase awareness of the gains that can be reaped from the integration of specially-abled people in every aspect of social, political, and cultural life.
For this year, the UN has decided the theme of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities to be ‘Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development.’ It aims to highlight and promote the role of innovation in fuelling an equitable and accessible world.
On this occasion this year, the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (GOI) has resolved to promote awareness about Dyslexia. One of the 21 disabilities recognised by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, the condition refers to a learning disorder where an individual experiences difficulty in reading. The problem results from issues in the areas of the brain responsible for processing language.
The Government of India has also advised the airlines to make in-flight announcements to promote awareness on the topic.
On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Delhi Airport is raising awareness about the challenges faced by disabled people. It is playing its part in creating an environment that provides specially-abled individuals equal opportunities by educating the public about the cause.
For this purpose, Delhi Airport will display standees to motivate people to celebrate many abilities of the differently abled and encourage the public to speak for dyslexia. Furthermore, DIAL will use social media platforms to educate people about the day.
The Delhi Airport has always championed the cause of specially-abled people. It has taken many initiatives to ensure the ease and convenience of challenged travellers. To minimise problems for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM), the airport has equipped itself with signage, Braille-coded lift keys, PRM-friendly desks, reserved seating areas, buggy service at pier junctions, and special PRM-friendly washrooms. Besides, the staff at the airport is also trained to provide needed assistance to challenged flyers.
A society develops in the real sense when it ensures the growth of every individual, including those with disabilities. So, on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, let’s recognise the many abilities of differently-abled people and resolve to speak up for dyslexia!
